Colloidal Silver and Ionic Silver

The terms colloidal silver and ionic silver are frequently used to describe silver products, but they don't necessarily refer to the same thing.

Understanding the distinction can make it easier to compare products and understand how they are manufactured.

What Is Colloidal Silver?

A colloid is a mixture containing very small particles dispersed throughout another substance.

In colloidal silver, microscopic particles of silver are suspended in a liquid, typically purified water.

What Is Ionic Silver?

Ionic silver contains silver atoms that have lost an electron and carry an electrical charge.

Unlike suspended metallic silver particles, silver ions are dissolved in the liquid.

Are Commercial Silver Products Purely Colloidal or Ionic?

Not necessarily.

Products marketed as "colloidal silver" can contain both suspended silver particles and dissolved silver ions. The proportions depend on the manufacturing process and formulation.

Why Does Ultra Silver Have a Darker Color?

Ultra Silver has a characteristic amber-to-dark-brown appearance.

The appearance varies with concentration, with our higher-concentration products generally appearing darker.

A product's appearance alone, however, doesn't establish its exact silver concentration. Independent laboratory analysis provides a more meaningful measurement.

Concentration Matters Too

Whether you're comparing colloidal or ionic silver products, it's also important to look at PPM, or parts per million.

Ultra Silver is available in:

  • 500 PPM
  • 1,000 PPM
  • 5,000 PPM
  • 10,000 PPM

A 10,000 PPM product contains twenty times the silver concentration of a 500 PPM product.

Independent Testing

Ultra Silver uses independent laboratory testing to verify product concentration.

We believe customers should have access to objective information about the products they're purchasing rather than relying solely on terminology, appearance, or marketing descriptions.
